Millport Team Time Trial 2002

Sunday 21st September

It was a cold but bright Saturday morning as riders from various clubs waited for the ferry at largs pier for a team trial bash around the isle of Cambria. Inverclyde managed to string together 3 teams, 2 four men and one three man.

The A team,Stuart Daisley,Hugh Jamieson,Robert McCready & Alan Holms
The B team,John McPaul,George McCarter,Eeric Daisley & Iain MacIntosh
The C team,John Northey,David Haddock(who I still owe a fiver) & David Newman.

Everybody piled on the ferry and off we went with everybody still reeling at the cost of the ferry!

HQ was the local Municipal buildings (A Hut),numbers were got and then all the strategy talk started in earnest. On to the bike and off for a quick warm up round the back of the island, with a headwind blowing, other riders passing the other way...people were starting to take this thing seriously. Then again we heard that the ferry managed to hit something coming into Millport and damaged its ramp, with teams stranded on board and they might miss a start. A tener to the right sea going person certainly helps cut down the competition.....

Start time and the Velo C team were first off heading out of town and up the hill, the B team followed shortly after. Away we went dodging cats, vans parked cars and the odd tourist on a mountain bike. I am told it was rather exciting coming past the ferry terminal area, there was a knack of dodging cars etc coming off the ferry, some seemed better than other at this.

The C team came in with a xx.xx mins and I am informed Davie Newman was the man of the moment doing a lot of work at the front with Davie Haddock performing his usual Thursday night repertoire.

The B team did a 24.xx and usual suspects John McPaul and George McCarter were looking strong, John was strong from the off with the other three playing catch-up at some points. Iain MacIntosh got dropped half way round the island and Eric Daisley hanging in there to cross the line.

The A team were among the favorites to take the title but they were narrowly beaten by 7 second, recording a time of 22:02 while Glasgow Couriers recorded a 21:55. Alan Holms wheeled in alone after a problem with his saddle setup, if you were there you know what I am talking about alas to say one more good pot hole and Alan would have speared his chuckies well and truly!
Later post mortem would reveal Shug raced halfway around the island with his brakes on, not a happy man.

Glasgow Couriers 21:55
Inverclyde Velo A 22:02
Ayrodynamic 22:24
Wallacehill CC 22:28
GWCC Young Squad 22:36
Inverclyde Velo B 24.xx
Inverclyde Velo C xx.xx

Later at the finish line, George McCarter gave everybody an impromptu version of River dance routine although John McPaul seemed more interested on other aspects of Georges performance!

All in, it was a good day with the weather being excellent and the cheese toasties and milk shakes to top the carbs up after the race went down a treat.
