The ' Shug Effect'

The good bit about Shug passing you, is that the chances are that you will be entertained by one of his very frequent "near death" experiences. Shug has a long record of S.T.A (Serial Tarmac Assault) from the length and breadth of the country. No road is safe from being "Shugged”.

His friendly demeanour and relaxed approach to racing mean that the best time to engage him in inane small talk is usually in the last 5 mins of his Turbo Trainer warmup for a championship event. He is available at this time for general chit-chat and passing the time of day. Go along, point out some deficiencies on his bike, make jokes about his race number being missing, or that his watch has stopped and he has missed his start - he really appreciates this and sees the funny side of it at all times.

Equally amusing, is to tell him after the event that you are sure the timekeepers are all Velo Ecosse supporters and they have fiddled it so that Mark Atkinson gubbed him again. Being the true sportsman, he will just sh(r)ug this off and reply "Ah well, there is always next year. Can I buy you a cup of tea?"

I'll never forget the time at Blairdrummond when he nipped behind the hedge at the start for a number 1 and big JJ Harris took out a set of allen keys and tightened all Shug's brakes on the start line at the '25 Champs. "3.....2....1....Go!" - and he stood up in the saddle, gritted his teeth so hard that his left varicose vein burst onto the road - and fell over because his brakes were screwed up.

Oh how we laughed as he chased the timekeepers up the road with the seat tube that he had bitten off of his frame! But being a nice guy, he saw the funny side afterwards - as mark Atkinson gubbed him once more.

What a nice man!
