I just recived this note from my work on the latest virus going round..

You should be aware of a zero day exploit that has been discovered this week. For those who are not clear this means that an exposure has been found for which there is no patch but there is active exploit code and websites already in the wild. Some of these sites have already been closed down but lists exist of other known malicious sites. One of these sites is registered to a past Russian president according to DNS records! Simply visiting these sites will cause the malicious code to infect the machine.

Unusually this is an exploit that actually does damage to a machine potentially causing the OS to be totally trashed, it has even been reported that issuing DOS box commands to an infected site will cause fatal damage to a machine.

It is also worth noting that this is effecting fully patched XP machines, ie, those with Service Pack 2 and all recent security patches.

The exploit is associated with the way IE handles WMF or Windows Meta Files and which application is opened when this files are viewed. The actual exposure is in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer which is the default applications for WMF files for later versions of IE and earlier versions of Firefox.

You have been warned!
