Local Inverclyde Velo rider Robert McCready traveled to Chester on Friday morning to prepare early for the Brittish 24hour time trial Championship .
Seventy riders had entered for the event,traveling as far as Northen Ireland and Aberdeen , Robert has been preparing all year for this Championship
In fact Robert has clocked up 10,000 miles on his training bike scince January this year.

Robert to his credit has now raced every distance you can on the Time Trial circuit ,that includes 10,25,30,50,100,12hour,24hour , he has also completed Lands End…..John o Groats twice, Edinburgh London Edinburgh also goes on his list , he aso has completed numerous Audaux events.

This event consists of riding as many miles as possible in the given time of 24hours, this achieved by racing on three circuits ,one day time ,one night time And then a finishing circuit which is closely controlled by time keepers to finalise completed distance .

Our Velo rider with his support team of 5 moniterd Robert from the start ,he set off at 2min past two om the Saturday afternoon , with tempretures of 30 Degrees hydration could be a problem, but 4 hours into the event a thunder storm dropped on the riders ,rain like you never seen before made the riders difficult to even see never mind race in, after 6 hours and 55 mins Robert made the decision to come in off the circuit to change onto his night racing bike all set up and waitingt by the support team with light and water bottles.

In came the rider, a complete change of clothes , 148 miles completed with an average speed of 21.48 MPH, An assessment of his condition was to
Sore right knee but other than that Robert was in good spirit and shape. 15 mins later he on the road again heading for the night circuit directed by the event Marshals.

All through the night and complete darkness 70 riders completed laps of this 40 mile circuit, what a sight in the roads around the country lanes of Chester.
An event organized by Mersey Roads C.C. 6.40 AM, Robert told his support team he was coming for a bike change and a 30 min break.
When off the bike he changed clothes and ate a hot meal . This was 9 hrs and19 mins ride time ,171.14 miles @ 18 .3 average and a total mileage so far of 319 miles and ride time of 16 hours and 14 mins.

Now heading back onto the day circuit and the right knee was getting more inflamed Robert pushed on , Time now 7.10 am , The Velo man kept the average speed at 19 mph now that he could see the lay of the road better,the Marshalls directed Robert onto the finishing circuit at midd-day ,

In the very hot conditions the water being handed up by the team was been poured on that inflamed right knee At 2 mins past two on Sunday afternoon Robert was instructed by the timekeepers to stop…………….450 MILES COMPLETED.@ AVERAGE SPEED OF 19 MPH……….TOTAL TIME 24 HOURS…………..7TH OVERALL IN THE BRITTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006.
